Best gay short films 2021

Best Gay Shorts [and Where to Watch Them]

There are so many gay-themed compact films out there, but many of them are a waste of occasion, either because the filmmaking is shoddy or the storytelling is dated. [That said, there are concise films made shoddily that transcend their flaws and become camp. And there are dated films that become significant because they are great reflections of the times they were made in. So all these is pretty subjective, if you ask me.]

I decided to put together an alphabetical list of gay short films I've loved/liked/appreciated for some reason, all of them at least I've ⭑⭑½-starred. [This rating is above average for me.]

For my purposes, this is a list of narrative/fictional brief films, but experimental limited films are also included. However, to keep the list manageable, I've decided not to include compact subject documentaries [with some special exceptions] and queer woman short films [also with one special exception]. I am also not including titles I've not seen, so this is attractive much a curated list. [Suggestions, however, will be highly appreciated in the comments.] I have included all Iris Prize winners here, regardless of sexuality or genre.

best gay short films 2021

There are so many unbelievable gay short films and movies available, it was hard to narrow them down to this shortlist.

Whilst there are more and more full-length gay films available (check out the Best Gay Movies on Netflix), historically these acquire been few and far between which is why directors have often turned to gay short films instead.

Many of these can easily be found on YouTube and you will notice a lot of common themes amongst them; coming out, bullying, split ups and secret passion to name a limited. [no_toc]

What is a Lgbtq+ Short Film?

A gay quick film is an authentic motion picture with a running time of 40 minutes or less focusing on a topic relevant to the LGBTQ society or focusing an LGBTQ cast.

The challenge is to create a gripping, thick and meaningful storyline in a very short age – the gay brief films in this shortlist certainly hit these markers.

Let’s be truthful. Shorts programs can be rough.

Watch any omnibus clip like Paris, je t’aime or To Each His Own Cinema and you’ll find that even some of our greatest filmmakers falter when presented with the short format. Shorts are really hard to do well. Even excellent ones often hint at promise more than feeling complete.

And yet shorts programs are one of the most exciting corners of any film festival. It’s where new voices are experimenting and unleashing creativity that’s yearning to be seen. And so I watched just about every short at Newfest relevant to our interests and you can just view the ones that are truly special.

Out of the 49 shorts I watched, these eight were my favorites. Check them out!
