Love In The Life Of Spies

Monterey, California

That night I went to the Gilded Cage with a purpose and was dressed accordingly: blue sports jacket, slacks, loafers without socks, pale shirt open to the third button. I arrived early and found a stool at the semi-circular bar, put a fiver on the bar for effect, ordered a Millers High Life, lit a cigarette, and looked around. The bar-stools were almost all occupied – by men. Soon they'd be three deep, it organism Friday night. The piano was set back in an alcove to the left-rear of the block. It also had bar-stools around it so you could drink there and look at the player with one elbow on the piano. Two adolescent couples were perched on the stools, the men in suits and ties and the giggly women showing a lot of leg. The men were probably asshole officers from Fort Ord, I figured. The piano player was playing As Time Goes By, probably requested by one of the girls. That kind of lady always requested that gentle of song because they liked to think of themselves as Ingrid Bergman - romantic and teary - without realizing that it wasn't a tune you could request, it had to hit you out of the azure. I lit another cigarette and nursed my beer.

Monterey LGBTQ City Guide

Situated on the stunningly scenic southern edge of Monterey Bay on Central California’s stunning Pacific Coast, Monterey is truly a picture-perfect destination known for its marvelous art and music scene, friendly people, and outdoor beauty. Situated three hours from San Francisco, it’s close enough to relish all that a giant city offers to watch and do, while still also offering the benefits of a more laid-back, coastal, lifestyle. Even greater, it’s an LGBTQ-friendly municipality where all can sense welcome and at home.

A Look at Monterey’s History

Monterey was initially occupied by Spain, and subsequently by Mexico from 1777 to 1846, and the Spanish-Mexican influence is still clearly seen in the architecture of the area. The city still boasts the oldest stone Spanish mission in California – the Presidio Chapel, which was built in 1877. Since becoming part of the United States, Monterey has been a very popular tourist destination due to its stunning coastal beauty – but it has also played an important role in agriculture and natural preservation, not to mention having a thriving art and song scene. Truly, Monterey is a cit

Carmel and Monterey: A California Escape with Spectacular Views and Rainbows

If you are California dreaming, you might be fantasizing about the idyllic the Golden State’s central coast.

Carmel-by-the-Sea (simply Carmel) and Monterey are the gateways to California’s Central Coast. The area is the dreamiest part of America’s first thoroughfare, the Pacific Coast Street, which stretches from Mendocino County to Orange County after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge two hours north of the area by car. The road is the world’s number one road trip, and this part of the drive boasts of the 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach and the plunging cliffs above the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur.

Currently, Monterey County has maintained low COVID-19 transmission rates. Proof of vaccination and mask mandates have been lifted, but it is still recommended to wear masks indoors at many venues. Stay up to date about health advisories during your visit.

Monterey was put on the guide by novelist John Steinbeck with his depictions of the agricultural region and Cannery Row in his novels. When the Monterey Bay Aquarium opened, it added to the area’s attractions as one of its notable places to visit.
