Gay cinderella

gay cinderella

My favorite Disney movie as a kid was “Cinderella.” If I said that to you face to face, you might be a little surprised. The person I’ve grown into does not look fond the kind of person who enjoyed a swooning romance, a rags-to-riches tale, a story where the girl gets swept off her feet by Prince Charming (literally).

As a kid, all I cared about were the pretty pictures moving across the screen, the catchy songs and, of course, the comedic talking animals. I would watch “Cinderella” over and over again and never tire of it, even going so far as to have my parents purchase me the deluxe edition DVD that had animation concept art and extra discs with trim scenes. I couldn’t earn enough. I needed to immerse myself in “Cinderella.”

But as I’ve grown up, my love for “Cinderella” has faded, and I’ve finally figured out why. After realizing I was queer in middle institution, I began to try out narratives that told the stories of people like me. At first, I felt myself limited to books and comics; there wasn’t a plethora of movies or TV shows targeted towards a young queer audience. There definitely wasn’t a famous show with visible gender non-conforming characters and stories

Cinders & Ashes, Book 5: A Gay Retelling of Cinderella

Will Finn and Rohan get their happily ever after?

To save their dying land, Rohan and Finn must rule together and reunite the Empire and Rirea, but they may have to cut a bloody path to get their thrones. Marikoth, aggressive gods, and even Finn’s loving father, Fae King Thalanil, stand in their way

War may be the only way for the two prophesied rulers to take back the lands that are destined to be theirs, but even a righteous war will bring destruction.

Do Finn and Rohan have the heart to fight to rebuild their world, even if it means sacrificing the things—or people—they love?

Angharad’s Thoughts:

I first came across this book when I included it in myLGBTQ+ 2020 release seriesand the cover immediately drew me in despite not usually being a fan of fairytales and their retellings. I loved that is was a dusky twist on the classic but still has all the tropes we realize and love in YA (with some things done differently too.)
First of all, our main character, Sophia was a powerhouse. I really love that she remained headstrong from the beginning of the novel to the end but still went through vast character development. She is strong in her opinions and just gives that fictional character energy where you just want to follow them into battle. Our other character, and love interest, was Constance who I would probably die for. When she was first introduced as a knife-wielding badass, I hoped she wouldn’t descent into that age-old trope but I was pleasantly surprised. She’s loyal and sensitive and I cherish how her identity was woven into the story.
The romance went in a different direction than I originally thought and I was very pleasantly surpr
