WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The percentage of U.S. adults who self-identify as lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, transgender or something other than heterosexual has increased to a recent high of 7.1%, which is double the percentage from 2012, when Gallup first measured it.
Gallup asks Americans whether they personally identify as straight or heterosexual, lesbian, gay, double attraction, or transgender as part of the demographic facts it collects on all U.S. telephone surveys. Respondents can also volunteer any other sexual orientation or gender identity they opt for. In addition to the 7.1% of U.S. adults who consider themselves to be an LGBT individuality, 86.3% say they are straight or heterosexual, and 6.6% do not provide an opinion. The results are based on aggregated 2021 data, encompassing interviews with more than 12,000 U.S. adults.

India has 2.5m gays, government tells supreme court
Last month, the Supreme Court criticised the government for its shifting stand on the issue of decriminalising homosexual sex.
This was after a senior government lawyer, PP Malhotra, told the court that homosexuality was unnatural and immoral.
Within hours, the home ministry disowned the lawyer's statement and said he had read from an out-of-date file.
The health ministry then stated that it supported the 2009 Delhi High Court direct decriminalising gay sex.
Judges GS Singhvi and SJ Mukhopadhyaya criticised the government for not doing its "homework" on the case and ordered the government to provide a count of the country's homosexual population for the next hearing.
"You should have done your homework before coming to the court," they told an official.
The 2009 verdict decriminalising gay sex was welcomed by India's male lover community, which said the judgement would help defend them from harassment and persecution.
Many people in India still regard same-sex relationships as illegitimate, but rights groups have long argued that the law contravened human rights.
