Singer Ty Herndon Comes Out as Gay
Popular '90s land singer Ty Herndon has revealed that he's gay.
'Entertainment Tonight' leaked the news on their website seemingly by accident just hours before the television show was to build the official announcement. On Wednesday, the program teased that a twice-married state male would be coming out as gay during Thursday night's show. A video thumbnail with the words "Country Star Ty Herndon - I'm Gay" began appearing near the bottom many of the site's pages Thursday morning (Nov. 20).
A bit later in the day, ET posted their exclusive sit-down interview with the singer, in which he confirmed the rumors that own been swirling about his sexuality since the highlight of his success in the '90s.
Herndon's biggest hits were his debut unattached 'What Mattered Most' (1995), 'Living in a Moment' (1996) and 'It Must Be Love' (1998). Country singer Ty Herndon told People he’s “an out, proud and joyful gay man”, in an interview published today.
The 51-year-old musician said he’d struggled with how to publicly confront his sexuality for years, lying to many friends while coming out privately to close family members starting at the age of 20.
“I was 10, sitting in church and horrified that I might be a queer. Whatever that word meant, I knew that I probably was one,” Herndon told People. “And I know there’s a lot of those kids still out there. Telling my story is an opportunity to help just one of them.”
Herndon said he believes acceptance of the LGBT community is growing within the country song industry, mentioning Kacey Musgraves’s tune Follow Your Arrow. Musgraves sings about self-acceptance in the Country Harmony Awards song of the year.

The country celebrity opens up about his past, present and future in an interview with Entertainment Tonight's Nischelle Turner that rivals ABC's state soap "Nashville" with its real-life drama. Herndon discussed everything from his former drug use, his failed marriages and his current relationship.
"I have an terrific relationship that I've been in for a nice number of years," Herndon tells ET in a new sit-down airing Thursday. "[I] love him very much and he loves me."
Married twice before, Herndon reveals that both of his ex-wives were "absolutely" aware of his sexuality.
"I had a lot of people around me that I trusted at a time and I was like,'Hey, you know this about me but the world doesn't. So I'm gonna need to contact on your services for a little while,'" he confessed. "It was unfortunate that I had to do that, but I felt that's what I had to do to have my career. "Today, I get to tell the world that I am an out, proud and happy homosexual man," Herndon tells 'Entertainment Tonight''s Nischelle Turner.
Many people close to him -- including his two ex-wives -- have known his sexual orientation for years, but Herndon says he asked them to hold it secret.
"I had a lot of people around me that I trusted at a time, and I was like, 'Hey, you know this about me but the society doesn't. So I'm gonna need to call on your services for a little while,'" he says. "It was unfortunate that I had to perform that, but I felt that's what I had to do to contain my career. Standing on some pretty solid legs today, so I procure to tell my correctness today."
