These Gay-Friendly Cities Have Lots to Offer LGBTQ Buyers—Including Affordable Homes
It’s officially Identity festival Month, and after more than a year in lockdown, it’s time to celebrate! Although some festivities may still be virtual, or a bit more muted than in past years, there are still plenty of reasons—and opportunities—to dust off that rainbow flag and get ready to kiki across the country.
And while you're at it, maybe you can even find a recent place to live. But where?
While big cities favor San Francisco and Brand-new York have been long-renowned for their thriving queer scenes, they’re also notoriously expensive places to deal a home. And with home prices rising just about everywhere, it’s more important than ever to find places that are not only gay-friendly but also budget-friendly. That's why the ® data team sought out the nation's most affordable gay meccas.
What we found were mostly smaller cities with thriving lesbian, gay, bisexual, gender diverse, and queer cultures, and college towns that own strong anti-discriminatory laws. All of them have excellent housing stock, plenty of things to do, and prices that are still (relatively) within reach.

will go down in history as the year that the U.S. Supreme Court recognized same-sex couples’ legal right to marry in any U.S. state through the Obergefell v. Hodges decision. And following the ruling, all married queer couples were required to fulfill a familiar marital obligation: jointly filing federal tax returns.
In a recent paper, Brookings Senior Fellow Adam Looney and the Treasury Department’s Robin Fisher and Geof Gee analyze data from these tax returns to provide a first-of-its-kind analysis of the patterns of America’s gay married couples in the years immediately following the court’s decision. The numbers provide some key insights, including that they are generally younger, higher income, and less likely to claim dependent children than their different-sex peers.
Additionally, Looney and his colleagues were able to identify patterns surrounding where married lgbtq+ couples choose to live—all the way down to which neighborhoods they favor. Though these neighborhoods vary widely in size and location, their analysis shows that same-sex couples who filed taxes jointly in were most likely

The Gist
The top of our ranking is dominated by liberal strongholds prefer San Francisco (No. 1), Washington (No. 2), and Denver (No. 4). These cities tend to be the most progressive — at least at the municipal level — so feel free to speak “gay” here. Although generally not the most affordable, our top performers praise strong LGBTQ+ communities.

We’re happy to share this listing of the best small towns for LGBTQ+ folks in the U.S. because we know home is where we can be ourselves. In these small-scale burgs, gay-owned businesses abound—or maybe there’s just one, and that’s okay. Besides annual Pride celebrations, there are events around the rainbow community like drag shows, book clubs, and history tours.
