Roland Martin Insists He’s Not Coaching Bullies on #Teamwhipdatass
CNN’s Roland Martin offered what he called “final thoughts” last blackout on the uproar over his controversial tweets during the Super Bowl. Both GLAAD and National Dark Justice Coalition (NBJC) include said Martin promoted force against gays.
On Sunday Martin tweeted: “If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him! #superbowl” and “Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a call on from #teamwhipdatass”
Martin says now that his comments were about soccer, not homosexual men, and that they were deliberately over-the-top jokes. Though, it wasn’t Martin’s first turn with controversy over his comments about LGBT people.
“Even if he meant it in a jovial manner, Roland Martin’s words carry a concrete impact on the everyday lives of Black LGBT people, especially our youth. Given the number of rash murders, attacks and violent acts involving LGBT people of color, we cannot let statements such as this go unchecked

CNN prides itself on reporting breaking news as posthaste as possible, says Erik Wemple at The Washington Post. But "it's apparently a little slower in responding to in-house crises." CNN political analyst Roland Martin sent out "unequivocally homophobic tweets" during Sunday's Super Bowl, but CNN didn't suspend him until Wednesday. One tweet in particular — "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him!" — provoked the ire of gay rights groups. Martin apologized, claiming he was mocking soccer players, not gay men. Yeah, right, scoffs Joe Coscarelli at New York. "CNN didn't buy it, either." Is suspending Martin indefinitely the right response?
CNN should fire Martin: Urging hostility against anyone is "serious and ugly stuff," and it's even worse when aimed at an embattled group like gays and lesbians, says David Zurawik at the Baltimore Sun. I suspect Martin's employer agrees, and "I will be shocked to ever see him on CNN again." A network that strives to be more "journalistically responsible" than its cable news peers can't afford to keep "a po
Roland Martin Responds to GLAAD’s Accusations of Homophobic Comments
On Super Bowl Sunday,Roland Martin, a commentator for CNN, sent out a controversial tweet that resulted in GLAAD (Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) demanding his removal from the news network.
After an H&M commercial featuring a scantily clad David Beckham aired, Martin wrote on Twitter: “If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him!”

Almost immediately GLAAD picked up on the tweet, and demanded that Martin be fired from CNN, where he appears as a commentator.
On Monday, Martin issued a statement defending his comments, which he said were against soccer fans, and not gay men.
“Fam, allow me address the issue that some in the LGBT community have raised regarding some of my Super Bowl tweets yesterday. I made several cracks about soccer as I do all the day. I was not referring to sexuality directly or indirectly regarding the David Beckham ad, and I’m sorry folks took it otherwise,” he said in a statement.

The commentator has been suspended indefinitely for tweets he sent during Sunday's Super Bowl that were criticized as anti-gay, according to a expression released Wednesday. One tweet said, "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him!" "Roland Martin's tweets were regrettable and offensive," CNN's utterance reportedly said. "Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and tradition of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving precise consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the moment being." "CNN today took a strong stand against anti-LGBT violence and language that demeans any community," said Rich Ferraro, a spokesperson for the queer rights organization GLAAD. "Yesterday, Martin also spoke out against anti-LGBT violence. We look forward to hearing from CNN and Roland Martin to discuss how we can work together as allies and fulfill our comm .
